Lolita Glossary

Here is a list of terms and abbreviations that may be used in this blog that may not be familiar to new lolitas. I know there are other sites with such lists, but I wanted to make it easier for anyone new by having everything in one place.

This page is still a work in progress.

AP: Angelic Pretty, a Japanese lolita brand.

AatP: Alice and the Pirates. This is the sister brand of Baby the Stars Shine Bright.

BL: Bodyline, a lower cost Japanese lolita brand. Bodyline can be hit or miss, but they have a few iconic pieces. If you see someone calling a garment "l325" or something like that, it's usually a Bodyline piece. The pieces usually don't have cute names like other brands.

BTB: Behind the Bows, a livejournal posting for posting anonymous "secrets."

BtSSB: Baby the Stars Shine Bright, a Japanese lolita brand.

Burando: Another way to say "brand."

CGL: A 4chan forum for Cosplay and Gothic Lolita discussion.

Classic: Classic Lolita. Innocent World is an example of a Classic Lolita brand.

Closet Child: A Japan-based second hand lolita store.

CoF: Closet of Frills. a lolita Facebook group for posting photos of coords and sharing constructive criticism when desired.

Colorway: Many Japanese brands will call the different color options for a garment "colorways." For example, I ordered my Heavenly Cross JSP from Angelic Pretty in the black colorway.

Con: Convention. Rufflecon is a popular US lolita con, for example.

Coord: Short for "coordinate." Usage of this term originated in Japan. Essentially means "outfit."

Concrit: Constructive criticism.

Cutsew: A cut and sew style top, which is a fashion term for a top that does not have much tailoring, and is usually cotton or another forgiving fabric.

EGL: Elegant Gothic Lolita. This is another way to discuss lolita fashion. The abbreviation makes it easier to avoid the term "lolita" when necessary. A few years ago, this abbreviation was rarely used. Facebook banned several groups in 2016 for the use of the word "lolita," and since, the abbreviation has been used more often to prevent further misinterpretation.

Ero: Ero lolita. This is a subcategory of lolita where more skin is shown than other subcategories.

F+F: FanPlusFriend, a Chinese brand that sells lolita items as well as other fashions. They sell on Taobao, etsy, and also their own webstore.

GLB: Gothic & Lolita Bible, a Japanese Gothic Lolita magazine.

Guro: Guro (or gore) lolita. Coords for guro lolita include elements of gore, such as blood.

IW: Innocent World, a Japanese lolita brand.

Ita: Japanese exclamation for "ouch," this term has come to be a derogatory term used to describe some lolitas who don't quite follow the fashion's guidelines or wear cheap, low quality garments for lolita.

JetJ: Juliette et Justine, a Japanese lolita brand.

Kawaii: Japanese term for "cute" that has become more than just a word, but an expression of pop culture. Lolita is included in the umbrella of kawaii fashion.

Kuro: Black in Japanese, and an abbreviation for Kuro Lolita, which is characterized by wearing all black.

Lacemarket: A web-market for lolitas to buy and sell second hand lolita items.

Loliable: A way to describe an offbrand non-lolita item that could work for lolita.

Lolify: To make an offbrand or non-lolita item more lolita appropriate.

Mana or Mana-sama: Mana is a Japanese musician and also the designer of the brand Moi-meme-Moitie, which sells gothic and lolita clothing.

Meta: Metamorphose, a Japanese lolita brand.

Mr. Yan: The problematic owner of Japanese lolita brand, Bodyline.

Old School or Old-School: Refers to early lolita fashion aesthetics.

OoTD: Outfit of the day.

OP: Abbreviation for one-piece, which for lolita refers to a dress that does not require a blouse because it has sleeves.

OTK: Abbreviation for over the knee. Refers to socks or hosiery, typically.

OTT: Over the top. A coord or a garment can be described as OTT if it is over the top and fabulous. Think Marie Antoinette-wearing-a-ship-on-her-wig over the top.

Ouji: Means "boy style" and is used to refer to the more boyish subcategory of lolita where pants are worn instead of skirts/dresses.

Pannier: Serves a similar purpose to a petticoat, as it creates more volume under a skirt or dress. Looks like pillows tied to one's hips.

Petti: Abbreviation for petticoat. Used to create volume or poof under a skirt or dress. Vital to achieve the proper lolita silhouette. If you go without a petti, you may be deemed "ita."

RC: Rufflechat, a lolita Facebook page for discussion.

Replica: This refers to a garment or accessory that is a counterfeit copy of a brand item. Usually there is a difference in the quality of the item. Replicas sometimes are made in a broader variety of sizes than the original authentic item. Replica is a way to sugarcoat it, in my opinion. This is a point of contention in the community as some have no problem with replicas, while others are vehemently against them. There is some grey area, also. Some people are okay with design replicas for basic pieces, like more simple blouses or handbags.

Replica-chan: This is a derogatory term used in reference to lolitas who wear replicas, or try to pass off a replica as real.

Rococo: The Rococo movement is a period in art history. It began in France, and spread across the Western world during the late 17th and early 18th century. The term Rococo can be used to refer to interior decoration, architecture, furniture, porcelain goods, painting, fashion, and sculpture, to name a few. It is characterized by the use of pastel colors, serpentine lines and flourishes, as well as over-the-top embellishments and ornamentation. Think Louis IV's palace of Versailles. Lolita fashion has taken a great deal of inspiration from the Rococo period.

Sweet: Short for Sweet Lolita, or Ama-lolita. Sweet Lolita is one of the more popular subcategories of lolita fashion.

Taobao: A Chinese online marketplace, similar to eBay. Taobao is not limited to lolita, however many independent Chinese lolita brands use Taobao to sell their items.

Victorian: Refers to the Victorian era, which is a time in British history between the years 1837 and 1901, and for lolita purposes, anything in the style of the Victorian period. Queen Victoria was known for hosting many costume balls, which inspired elaborate fashion. She also mourned publicly for the rest of her life after the death of her husband, wearing mourning attire always. The Victorian period has been another source of inspiration in addition to the Rococo period for lolita designers and lolitas alike. Mourning attire, dark color palettes, lacing and corsetry, and bonnets can all be found in certain lolita styles.

VM: Victorian Maiden, a Japanese lolita brand.

WTB: Abbreviation for "want to buy." A lot of posts in lolita sales groups will start with "WTB" or "WTS."

WTS: Abbreviation for "want to sell." A lot of posts in lolita sales groups will start with "WTB" or "WTS."
